I have an uncle from Sicily who alleges that most olive oil produced in the US is
around 90% petroleum oil.

Ah, but see, most olive oil *in* the US isn't produced here. What we get are the dregs of the olive oil industry from everywhere in Europe. We have the most lax standards of any Western nation for what passes for olive oil, so the rest of the world dumps their crap on us. If you can find olive oil that is produced here, it's probably by a small company and will be loads better than the mass imported stuff from Italy.
